Looking for something specific? Give me a call. My home has been my design showcase and now our design treasures can make your home a showcase too!

Kitschy trinkets and works of art serve to remind us of our adventures and add interest to our homes. I’m intimately aware of this now. After 15 years of living in Northern Virginia, my husband and I have decided to make our Scottsdale home our permanent home.  We’ll still be maintaining an office in Northern Virginia just as we’ve maintained an office in Arizona.

This is a huge change but one that we are excited about.  I also feel that it’s good for a designer to move and experience the “joys” that come with moving house. It’s like a doctor who finds himself in the hospital and experiences all the frustrations of being a patient. So many of my clients have come to me after having moved into a new house hoping that I can help answer the “now what do I do with all of my stuff?” question.

First, I know how much you love your window treatments that you had custom made. They completed the rooms where you have your favorite pieces of furniture.

Honestly, will they fit in your new home? They won’t in my new space. We’re moving to a home with 12 foot ceilings. They need to convey with the sale. I will miss them. But I can now look forward to creating new spaces that reflect my updated tastes and surroundings. And while we’re talking about window treatments, same goes for that chandelier you have in your hallway and over your kitchen and dining room tables. Unless you inherited priceless heirlooms, they should really stay where they are.

Second, I know that you’ve had the bedroom suite in your guest bedroom since you were married. Does it really belong in your new home and will it fit? How about the pool table in the “game room” or matching lamps in your study? Now is a good time to evaluate every piece of furniture you own. For me, many of my favorite pieces won’t fit — size or style wise — in Arizona. We are moving from a two-story brick colonial to a single story stucco home that is surrounded by Mexican and Spanish colonial influences.

So what do you keep? First ask yourself, what do you need? If you are moving to a larger home or a home of the same size, you may elect to keep everything, at least at first, so that you have the furniture you need to live comfortably. But be prepared to make changes. For instance, I have a custom designed entertainment center that I just can’t part with. I feel it’s funky enough to work with any design. But I may be wrong. I’m also taking a few pieces of favorite furniture and rugs, and of course, my art. I’ve got wonderful mementos from Paris, Barcelona, London, Key West, New York City, as well as one of a kind pieces from craft fairs and flea markets.

As for moving our “stuff” that for us was an easy decision. If you pack and move yourself you have to physically touch everything you own twice. First when you wrap it, then when unwrap it. The thought of moving 15 years worth of belongings was daunting. We’re having professional packers come and transport our items to a climate controlled storage facility until we arrive.

I’ll be updating the blog about the move so that you can track how I handle becoming a “patient.”

More coming soon from Arizona.
