Expanding Horizons, Downsizing Space
Greetings from Arizona and my new Black Mountain Studio! I have an amazing view of the mountains – talk about a design inspiration — from the rugged hiking trails to the unbelievable sunsets. I haven’t taken a lot of photos yet but you can see some stunning pictures at: http://www.blackmountainconservancy.org.
Even though I’m traveling more between Virginia and Arizona I’m reminded everyday that I’m in the desert and how harmonious natural design can be with all of its colors and textures. And while I adore art, there is nothing more spectacular than the changing skies we have every day.
This brings me to this month’s tips on designing outdoor living spaces.
Here in the Southwest, the beautiful weather means we live more outdoors and have kitchens, bars, and sitting areas complete with televisions. If the idea of an outside television sounds great, checkout the Frontgate catalog or go online to www.frontgate.com. Here you’ll find high end furniture and accessories for outdoor living in all climates.
But if your idea of outdoor living is to get closer to nature and away from electronics, you can still define your space with a bit of personality. Look for outdoor art that doesn’t rust, fade or disintegrate. And remember that outdoor water resistant art is also great indoors for bathrooms.
If you’re lucky enough to couple a great outdoor space with a pool and mountain view, who needs to live indoors?
And while you’re outside, grab your camera and take some photos. Simple compositions of flowers, rock groupings, or anything that strikes your interest can be developed into large prints and framed to bring the outdoors inside.
I am excited about expanding my horizons to Arizona. I will maintain an office in Virginia on Main Street in Fairfax and plan to be back in the Virginia area every month. I am eager to see the ways in which the brilliant Arizona sunsets will inspire my work both here and in Virginia.
