October 2009

The holidays are just around the corner and this is traditionally a time when we open our homes to our family and friends. It’s also a time when we see that our home needs a little sprucing up before everyone arrives. This year if you are balancing your budget a little tighter than in the past, don’t despair. Here are some of my best tips to decorate when you are on a budget

1. Start with a cleaning and clutter removal program. Go through your rooms and see if there are “treasures” that need to be added to a yard sale. Put away your clutter and polish your furniture, clean your windows and your light fixtures. When you’re done take a look around at the new open space. Fall is also a good time to have your carpets cleaned. If you live in a cooler climate, you’ll soon be spending more time inside. If calling in a professional service is out of your budget, you can rent a rug cleaning machine or buy one. They’re great to have for emergency spills.

2. If adding or replacing pieces is a redecorating must for your home this year, make sure you have a plan. Do you need additional seating? Do you need to replace a couch? Does your room need additional light? Would you like to add art to an empty wall or new curtains to your windows? Set a budget and decide what elements are essential, such as good quality furniture, and what elements are more “nice to haves” such as expensive art.

3. Beware the going out of business sale. It’s an unfortunate sign of the times but there are many furniture and home decorating stores going out of business these days. And while you may find some dream furniture at amazing prices, buying something just because it’s a good deal is never a good idea.

4. Redecorate from within. One of my favorite tricks is to move pieces around clients’ homes. Give that painting hanging over the sofa a new view in another room. Move side tables, mirrors, and lamps around. Poke into the attic, cellar, or garage you may be surprised at what you find.

5. Invest in some works of art. Not all art is expensive. If you live in Northern Virginia, The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, www.torpedofactory.org is a great place to find art in all price ranges and tastes under one huge location. If art isn’t on your list, consider adding some fresh greenery. Houseplants have been shown to clean the air, brighten your mood, and add a bit of interest to any room. Yard sales and flea markets are great places to find interesting pots too.

6. Remember that time is money. If you have to fix a problem area before guests arrive or you just want to give yourself a gift or a great looking space, consider reaching out to a design professional. It can take hours to visit stores, match paint colors, or just decide where to place furniture and lighting. Designers can help you quickly pull together colors, fabrics, furniture, and art to create rooms that are comfortable and functional on any budget.

So as you get ready to welcome your guests this holiday season, remember that you can create a great space even if Santa is feeling a little thin this year.

I want to thank everyone who turned out for last night’s Home Stretch wine tasting and silent auction event held at the USA Today building in Tysons, Virginia. The room was jam-packed with generous donors, great food, music, and good spirits.

Homestretch provides essential services to homeless families living in Northern Virginia. As someone who works to help my clients turn their houses into homes, I’m inspired by the stories of Homestretch families who have graduate through the program and who have gone on buy their own homes.

If you were unable to attend last night’s event, you can still help. Visit Homestretch online at
